About Us

The Prest family has been established in the Northallerton area for more than 350 years and various members of the family have run businesses here since the mid 19th century.

Our business was started in 1926 by W.L. Prest, Snr, from his house in Upwell Road, Northallerton, under the name of W.L.Prest & Son.

Originally, the business was run by Mr. Prest along with his wife who provided all the secretarial services.

Apart from House Sales and Lettings, our many varied clients have included:

  • The Halifax Building Society
  • The part-time secretary of Northallerton
  • The National Farmers Union
  • Secretary of the Station Mart
  • Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages
  • Local agents for various insurance companies

In 1933 the business moved to its current premises at 65 High Street Northallerton, which to this date has acted as both the company's office and family home.

In 1946 W.L. Prest, Jnr joined us and helped to gradually expanded the business over the ensuring years.

John Prest joined the firm in 1963 upon leaving school and became a partner in 1971.

The business has changed focus over the ensuing years, with a greater emphasis being placed on: House Sales, Residential Lettings and Financial Services.

In 1996, John and his late wife, Sue, took back the business from the General Accident company and concentrated on expanding its already very good reputation in the residential lettings market.

By being able to concentrate solely on residential lettings, John and Sue built up the business from a relatively small number to one that now has well over 600 properties to date.

The business is built upon the excellent family name and reputation that has been built over the past 83 years in this area.

It is now flourishing with John's son Mark, who is now a partner who is actively involved in planning for its future growth and success.

Although the business has on moved with the times, with modern ideas being introduced on a constant basis, one thing which will never change is the family's commitment to good, old fashioned customer service where the 'customer always comes first'.
